World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Review
game: World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade
review | 02/14/07 | Amanda Bateman
We probably don\'t even have to publish this review, because World of Warcraft is a game that carries its own legion of fans. The ever-popular World of Warcraft\'s first expansion, The Burning Crusade, is here, and WoW players will absorb it into the fold simply because it\'s more of what they already love: World of Warcraft. If you managed to pry yourself from the game, then don\'t get the expansion...because you might find it hard to walk away again. The powers that be have opened new doors to adventure, and it\'s hard to turn your back on that a second time.

Magic the Gathering Online Gets Facial
game: Magic the Gathering Online
preview | 01/23/07 | Chris Martin
Magic the Gathering is now a classic card game. It\'s reached such long-term profundity for many an adolescent and twenty (or thirty) something since it\'s inception in 1993 that it might be the most dynamic single game of all time. It certainly has one of the most hardcore fan bases of all time. We\'ve taken a look at the new layout of Magic Online and we\'ve got impressions. Good ones. All that and a colossus, inside.

Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam Review
game: Tony hawk's Downhill Jam
review | 12/23/06 | Matt James
Tony Hawk\'s Downhill Jam is sort of like a THPS lite, but that doesn\'t make it a game you should avoid. Building on the old-school THPS timed gameplay style, Downhill Jam offers up some quality gameplay on the Nintendo DS. If you\'re looking for something a little less intense than THUG or Project 8 for your daily commute or li\'l skater-in-training, the you could do worse than grabbing Downhill Jam. Check out Matt\'s review for the details.

Response and Rebuttal Part 1: What We Missed in Videogame Violence Studies
editorial | 09/11/06 | Chris Martin
Sometimes we recieve emails that lead to internal debates. Sometimes, those debates rage out of control; sometimes they become enlightening. After posting \"Videogame Violence Causes Subdued Reactions\" we recieved feedback, some positive, some negative. But there was one response that needed to be shared with the gaming community because its outcome was more enlightening and honest than we had anticipated.

Videogame Violence Causes Subdued Reactions
news | 08/21/06 | Chris Martin
With videogames in the spotlight, and movies and television taking a backseat to criticism for a while at least, Professor Nicholas Carnagey of Iowa State University has conducted a study to see if videogame violence desensitises gamers to other forms of violence. Skeptics might be thinking \"of course\"; any kind of violence over prolonged durations will cause the viewer to be desensitised in the end. Well, studies are showing that it\'s much quicker than expected. You might be shocked from the results.

Bully Trailer Revealed
game: Bully
news | 08/11/06 | Chris Martin
While originally criticized by parental groups for having scenes of extreme violence even before those scenes were made (seriously people - did former Sen Joseph McCarthy teach us nothing?), Bully by Rockstar is turning out to be a very different game than once thought.

Another Great Platformer Based on a Cartoon: Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi: The Genie and the Amp
game: Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi: The Genie and the Amp
review | 07/21/06 | Laurie Taylor
Ami and Yumi are back in Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi: The Genie and the Amp, fresh from D3 Publisher, whose lineup this year includes several noteworthy titles. For the younger set, The Genie and the Amp is pretty much right on: A cool franchise is done justice with good production and solid game design. This won\'t popularize the Puffy AmiYumi franchise with the hardcore gaming demographic, but it will be a hit on the playground. Read Laurie\'s review for the details.

Review: Stacked With Daniel Negreanu
game: Stacked with Daniel Negreanu
review | 07/14/06 | Matt James
Poker is hot right now. Anybody can tell you that. So it\'s no wonder that it has made its way into videogames. In fact, it\'s always been there, being one of the most simple games to program and all. But titles like Stacked with Daniel Negreanu seek to trade on the recent surge in Poker popularity and leverage the latest in gaming technology. Does it work out? Well, we\'ve been trying to guess the review score from looking at Matt\'s stoic face all day long, but we can\'t tell. He\'s that good. Check the review to find out.

The Movies: Stunts and Effects Review
game: The Movies: Stunts and Effects
review | 07/07/06 | Jason Perkins
Lionhead Studios addressed the lack of special effects in last year\'s The Movies by releasing an expansion pack, The Movies: Stunts and Effects. Installing the new expansion changes very little in the simulation until you\'ve played through the 1960s, but opens up a wide range of options for the machinima community. Budding directors can now control a freely movable camera and place stuntmen into precariously dangerous situations. Stunts and Effects is aimed at gamers who are already invested in The Movies and want to make it better; for everyone else it\'s just a worthy addition that adds yet another group of needy staffers for the player to manage. RTS+RPG=F-U-N, a Review of SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars
game: SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars
review | 07/01/06 | Blaine Krumpe
Blending RPG and RTS elements, SpellForce 2: Shadow Wars puts you in command of an army tasked with defending the known world from utter evil. OK, so the innovation doesn\'t exactly carry through to the narrative plot. Regardless, if you love RPGs and you love real-time strategy, then you will likely love SpellForce 2\'s hybrid. From masses of ground forces to aerial assaulting mythological creatures, SpellForce 2 manages to add a little bit of everything without spoiling the soup. Check out Blaine\'s review here.

Saint's Row Preview
game: Saint's Row
preview | 05/19/06 | RJ Brooks
Saint\'s Row comes off as another GTA clone just trying to cash in on the current fads: Gangstas + Free Roaming Play = $$$. But for some reason, it has taken the interest of Mr. RJ Brooks here on the GF! Staff. What is it? The crazy customizable gangster looks? The street cred imported through story advisors with gang affiliations? Nah, it\'s just the sucker-punching civvies as you car-jack them. That\'s gotta be it. Get the full story about Saint\'s Row in Rob\'s preview.

Hands on with The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
game: The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
preview | 05/13/06 | George Holomshek
Twilight Princess might be the star of the show, but the DS Zelda title Phantom Hourglass is still worth a look. Pursuing the cartoon-Link style of Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass fully exploits the DS touch-screen. Players lead Link around by tapping the screen and making a small fairy appear. Link follows this fairy to wherever you want him to go. Sounds wacky? Yep. But George says it\'s actually not bad. Check it out.

Naruto: Clash of Ninja Review
game: Naruto: Clash of Ninja
review | 05/08/06 | George Holomshek
D3 Publisher and developer, Eighting, have done good work with the Naruto Gamecube title, Naruto: Clash of the Ninja. For a franchise-based kids\' game, Clash of the Ninja offers surprisingly enjoyable fighting action, especially in the multiplayer, and nice visuals in the 2D-fighter tradition. This is one cartoon-based title that parents don\'t have to be afraid to buy their children. George has the full story here.

Naruto: Ninja Council Review
game: Shonen Jump?s Naruto: Ninja Council
review | 05/08/06 | RJ Brooks
The Naruto franchise gives us the old one-two punch with a Gamecube title and this Game Boy Advance game, Naruto: Ninja Council. Featuring bright, anime-styled graphics and traditionally-based 2D platforming and brawling action, Ninja Council has a lot of promise. But does all that promise pay off? Or is this an example of the OTHER kind of cartoon franchise-based game (the kind you shouldn\'t play)? Get Robert\'s full review here to find out.
