The Xbox 360 needed a killer app to help counteract the release of both the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii, a game that would make their year-old system more appealing to potential Christmas shoppers. Well, Epic delivered with Gears of War, one of the best games to ever grace a game system. Even after the shiny new gleam has worn off, Gears of War continues to amaze, and promises to be a lasting online and offline hit for some time to come. Between Gears of War and Halo, Microsoft is holding some intellectual properties that will sell consoles, and you better bet that they know it.

The Xbox Live Vision Camera is a great thing in most ways, but we wish there were more to do with it at the moment. Having just launched, not a lot of folks have dropped the 40 beans necessary to add a (slightly creepy) glowing eye to your Xbox 360s already too powerful and communicative brain. But the potential is undeniable: A solid camera and incredibly easy installation and configuration bode well for this device, which may also hold Microsoft's key to providing Wii-like game interaction without a controller. The advent of services like Xbox Live and the Wii Virtual Console have changed the dynamics of the industry. Suddenly there's a marketplace for less mainstream genres that have a hard time competing against the likes of Halo and Zelda. One such genre: Adventure Games. According to 1up.com, Nintendo has heard fans asking for adventure game content and contacted TellTale games about the possibility of bringing Sam and Max to the Wii. A sure thing? Far from it, but it's nice to know that you can make a difference if you shout loud enough. Good job, guys and gals.

Nintendo has finally given us concrete pricing and release date details for the Nintendo Wii. The Wii will be available on November 19th, 2006 in a single bundle for $249.99. The bundle will include one white Wii console, one nunchuk and Wiimote, one sensor bar, cords, and a copy of Nintendo Wii Sports. The inclusion of the extra game is an unexpected surprise. With videogames in the spotlight, and movies and television taking a backseat to criticism for a while at least, Professor Nicholas Carnagey of Iowa State University has conducted a study to see if videogame violence desensitises gamers to other forms of violence. Skeptics might be thinking "of course"; any kind of violence over prolonged durations will cause the viewer to be desensitised in the end. Well, studies are showing that it's much quicker than expected. You might be shocked from the results.

Polish developer Nibris spilled the beans on their upcoming Raid Over the River, an exclusive Nintendo DS and Wii two-part series. When archaeologists in Peru discover an ancient artifact, top-down aerial time-travelling combat ensues (as you probably expected). The game looks and sounds like a spiffed up River Raid, but this revamp includes the addition of touch-screen control elements (most of the game is played traditionally) and voice-activated special moves. The PlayStation 2 launch was legendary for beginning the "shortages" craze. After last year's Xbox 360 launch, all gamers should now realize that if they want a new console system on launch day, it will be a fight. Nintendo has (sort of) spilled the beans about the Wii price and their system launch plans in a recent fiscal year 2006 projection report. Nintendo has stated that the Wii system will not exceed $250 in America, or ?25,000 in Japan. They expect to ship six million units for the launch window, and a total of 17 million units during the first year of the Wii's life. These numbers are worldwide, and Nintendo has committed to a worldwide simultaneous launch. Get more details in our report.
