True story: I was in an arcade in Hong Kong a couple of weeks ago and everyone was lining up in front the latest light-gun game sensation - Hong Kong Super Kill Cop, or something like that. I threw down my tokens and drew, only to find some high tech gadgetry was tracking my body movement.. You want your character to duck behind that desk, you better duck.. or lean, or dodge. It was like lasertag only cooler because it had all the joy of a videogame. By the time I got capped by a crime lord I was breathing heavy, sweating profusely and my muscles were cramped from over exertion. It was one of the most intense 30 seconds I've ever spent with a videogame. Apparently I'm not the only gamer in need of a little exercise. Aaron Stanton takes on the issue in his latest article. For a lot of gamers, our love affair with light-gun games began and ended with Duck Hunt on the NES. Part of the problem-- it wasn't always easy to find a light-gun even if there were games available for it (Dreamcast, anyone). Namco isn't down with that routine, and Time Crisis 3 is their latest title in the genre. It even comes packaged with the light-gun for a reasonable price, or without the gun if you already have it. A legendary disappointment around these parts, Baldur\'s Gate: Dark Alliance for the Xbox packs the same gorgeous visuals and great gameplay. What\'s wrong with that? Nothing, except the fact that it\'s over almost before it\'s begun and the replay value is pretty much zip.

Working Designs is a small development/publishing house that specilizes in finding some of the best Japanese titles available and giving us stateside gamers a chance to get in on the action. They've been delivering high quality games since the Turbografix 16 and have developed a signature style of addictive gameplay and superb writing. Most recently they've given us Lunar and Vanguard Bandits, two of my favorite RPGs on the PlayStation. Lunar 2: Eternal Blue will probably (hopefully) make its way into your PlayStation pretty soon, and Working Desings has two titles, Silpheed and Gungriffon Blaze, lined up for the Playstation 2 launch in October. I had a chance to ask Victor Ireland, President of Working Desings, some questions and get the skinny on their new titles, their creative approach, and those ever-so-sweet RPG translations.

Just when we were ready to count Nintendo out of the running they jump back into the arena with guns blazing. At Spaceworld in Japan this past week Nintendo unveiled the GameCube, their latest bid for the home console market. The colorful cubes look like the next generation in gaming, at least from the outside. The GameCube's most striking feature wasn't the neon colors or its shape, but the controller. It appears to be an odd mix of the N64 controller and Sony's Dual Shock controller with a completely new approach to buttons.

After digging ourselves out from under the digital press kits and betas, here are what we think will the top dozen games of 2000. But first, a few caveats: we chose not to include any of the games that we chose as best of show for last year--that means that some excellent games--like Shogun, Diablo II, Deus Ex, Giants, and Oni-- will not be listed below. And we also decided not to include a few most excellent games that will be released in the very near future--including Sierra\'s Ground Control and Activisions\' Vampire: The Masquerade and Dark Reign 2.
