game: My Sim Aquarium

Formosoft and Viva Media bring us a simulation that has some promise, but which ultimately winds up floating on the surface. My Sim Aquarium promises a simulated fish tank, complete with 48 species and loads of decorations, plants, mollusks and whatnot. This could be a cool idea, if a bit wacky, but ultimately it ends up being a lot less thrilling that we thought it would be. Check Shawn's review here.

The light-gun style genre might be set for a comeback in the near future. Nintendo is pressing new and unusual styles of interaction with the Wii, and shooting games reminiscent of the NES light zapper are sure to be a part of that. Not to be outdone, Namco was showing off the sequel to one of the most notable granddaddy's of the light-gun genre, Time Crisis 4. Traditionally released on the PS2, the Time Crisis series is looking true to form and has Rob excited after a bit of hands-on with the title at E3. Time Crisis keeps getting better with time.

Overall, Sony's PlayStation 3 area was pathetic (and less crowded than we've ever seen at the Sony booth since 1999). Other than anti-aliasing issues, wonky early builds, and (at best) 360-quality graphics, there wasn't much to talk about. Except one thing: Sony did surprise everyone by announcing a me-too technology that adds tilt-sensitivity to the PS3 controller. How did that work out? Well, Jeremy took some time with the showcase title for the new tilt-controls, Warhawk, a flight combat game that shows how any new control element, no matter how small, can make a moderate game kind of sort of fun. Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Sonic contained the same features and levels. The difference between the games is where one would expect it to be-the graphics. However, the version with the best graphics is not the "powerhouse" PlayStation 3. Our man, Rob, runs down how the first next-gen Sonic title is coming along, and finds one of the most grievous examples of PS3 comparing unfavorably with the Xbox 360.

Namco has been steadily rolling out the latest games for the "mobile arcade" of the future. At E3, the Pac-Man Arcade was in full effect: Besides a sequel to everybody's favorite game, Pac-Man, there are tons of new games to download that include both retro and cutting edge content. As the mobile gaming space continues to open up, Namco has managed to make strides in every direction, from games to ring tones and branding gaming as a "theme" for your fave hipster handset. Enchanted Arms is one of the few Japanese-developed games coming to American Xbox 360s this year. Already out in the JP, we know it's a solid RPG with traditional elements and sparkly graphics. But can it offer up that something special that Xbox owners crave? Will Wright's Spore is a hot topic. Due for any platform that will run it at some point in the indeterminate future (you know how these uber-game projects go...), Spore offers, literally, the whole universe in a game. Microsoft's 500 lbs gorilla this Fall is Gears of War. Not only did Gears manage to rip the GamesFirst! Best of Show trophy right out of our +5 Controller Grip, but it managed to prove to some jaded fellows that it is more than just another shooter. Featuring a focus on team-based strategic play, elements of quick-reflex skills, and some of the best audio and visuals we've ever seen, Gears of War is the one game every Xbox 360 owner will buy this Fall.

EA's Battle for Middle Earth series brings the insanely huge battles of the Lord of the Rings trilogy to the small screen (if you aren't blessed like our man Jeremy with a really big monitor). But now EA is set to make Battle for Middle Earth II the first major real-time strategy game to work well on the home console. Previous attempts to bring titles like Starcraft to the game consoles have fallen flat, but after some hands-on time with BFME2, it looks like EA has finally broken through to a working control scheme that should make Xbox 360 owners very happy.
game: Star Trek Legacy

Star Trek: Legacy was one of the most impressive titles we saw at E3 2006. Featuring nearly every ship from every series and many different famous battles from Trek history, this is definitely one for the die hard fans. EA showed off the latest addition to the Battlefield Franchise: Battlefield 2142. This installment adds a little sci-fi flair to the action, but remains true to the roots of the series in its realism and excellent online multiplayer support. We just wish it had some kind of interesting storyline, since the futuristic setting easily allows for the most imaginative (or at least slightly clever) premise of all the Battlefield games. Still, Blaine says we'll be able to get over the plot and focus on the action, which is oh-so-sweet. Get the in-depth hands-on preview here.
game: The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

Twilight Princess might be the star of the show, but the DS Zelda title Phantom Hourglass is still worth a look. Pursuing the cartoon-Link style of Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass fully exploits the DS touch-screen. Players lead Link around by tapping the screen and making a small fairy appear. Link follows this fairy to wherever you want him to go. Sounds wacky? Yep. But George says it's actually not bad. Check it out.

Booth babes have been a hot topic at E3 this year. The ESA has instigated additional enforcement policies to help control the extent to which booth babes reveal their bodies, and not everyone is happy about that. When two girls in revealing clothing showed up outside the convention center with signs that read, "Booth Babe Protest: I'm "E" for Everyone," and, "Bikinis > Bullets," we couldn't help but stop for an interview. When E3 security showed up to chase them off the grounds, we also couldn't help but throw a press credential, a camera, and a little weight into the mix in an attempt to put it to The Man. Seems to have worked.

It was quite a day at the Nintendo booth at E3 today. With 27 titles, along with the Wii itself to be seen inside the fortress of a booth Nintendo had built, demand was high and lines were long. How long, you ask? Try a line of people with enough manpower that, if they wanted to, could have marched across the hall and held most of the Sony booth hostage. And while this mass of humanity deterred most of the GamesFirst! crew until tomorrow, our man Chris decided to brave the storm. Not only did he manage to come back alive, he even brought back an amusing story and some impressions of Mario's latest adventure.
