Editorial: The Reality of Games: Do Games Lead to Violence?
Articles Archive | 03/13/05 | Gary Wong
Gamers praise developers for the increasing visual authenticity found in video games. Video Game Theory: The Videogame to Movie Craze: A trend that has to end?
Articles Archive | 03/05/05 | Chris Martin
Using many of the same storytelling conventions as the movie industry, it's not surprising that game plots have been turning up on film pretty consistently these days; few, as of yet, are really any good. What makes it so hard to turn a good game into a good movie? Is one medium really incompatible with the other? Chris doesn't think so, and he explains his views in this excellent and informed perspective of game-to-movie adaptations. If you don't want to lose faith in the movie industry's ability to make competent movies out of what should be excellent source material, this is an article you need to read before catching films like Alone in the Dark.

P2P For the Gaming Industry
Articles Archive | 02/18/05 |
Since P2P has become ubiquitous on the Internet, it has mostly been associated with game, movie and music piracy, which has somewhat prevented P2P technologies from being used to their full potential to enhance your gaming experience. Our own Wayne Chang, who is also CEO of AceGain and ByteSwarm, which provide download functionality for GF!, takes a look at the promise of P2P technologies, focusing on ByteSwarm, the technology he knows best, as an example of potential benefits we could see from safe, secure P2P networks.

Alien Hominid
game: Alien Hominid
review | 01/02/05 | Laurie Taylor
It's always good to see a game developed independent of the mainstream industry, as is the case of Alien Hominid, a side scrolling mountain of action that scores points with anyone that has a taste for old-school, Contra-style gameplay. Read why this stylistic GameCube and PS2 title is well worth your time.

Gamesfirst! Holiday Wishlist! '04: Part 1
Articles Archive | 12/16/04 | Chris Martin
There's no time better in the gaming industry than Christmas, partly because there's always an excess of quality holiday titles hitting the shelves, but also partly because it's the one time of year when someone else might join in the feeding of our gaming habits. It's a time of possibility; a time when not only is it possible to maybe get free games, but if classics like Miracle on 34th Street are to be believed, also, maybe, things like houses and stuff. So when we here at GF! asked a number of our crew what they really wanted for Christmas, we didn't let them be limited by anything like reality. Be sure to read Part I of our GamesFirst! Christmas Wishlist, where we reveal the true depth of our gaming addictions (a few of the responses may lead to psychiatric evaluations, and probably at least one committal? it happens every year). Only 9 days and counting!

Questionable Approaches: Girls in Gaming
Articles Archive | 12/12/04 | Aaron Stanton
There are stereotypes in the gaming industry. There's the concept of the nerdy guy that never goes outside, that never plays sports, that weighs too much, and has a pale, colorless complexion. But most of the time, these stereotypes are inaccurate. For starters, you could take the above example and, at least nearly every other time, read it girl? where the guy? is now. And the rest of it? That's just right out. Battling stereotypes is one of the obstacles our industry has to overcome. Are columns like GameSpy's new GirlSpy a way to do that? Aaron doesn't think so. Do you agree with him? Be sure to read and find out.

Midway Arcade Treasures 2
game: Midway Arcade Treasures 2
review | 11/30/04 | Chris Martin
Some people have greater claim to history than others. Britney Spears, who's been a pop icon for somewhere around five years, has a harder time legitimately releasing a Greatest Hits album than say, The Rolling Stones, or The Beatles. But in the videogame industry, few companies can claim history like Midway, and they've put together another collection of classics to let us gamers relive the old-school. How have these forerunners held up over the years? Make sure you read our review to find out if this collection should make it into a loved one's gift pile? or onto your wish list.

It's not unusual for new trends to emerge at each annual Electronics Entertainment Exposition. Video games represent a relatively young but now thriving and dynamic industry that has been steadily gaining market share in the entertainment sector. In 2001, video game sales increased 43% to some $9.4 billion, approaching the music business and surpassing box office revenues. Growing numbers of people are tuning out, preferring to turn on their PlayStation 2s, Nintendo GameCubes, Microsoft Xboxes, and PCs.

What Gamers Got
Articles Archive | 10/06/01 | GF! Back Catalogue 10/2004 => 1995
Valve has partnered with gaming ISP, Speakeasy.net, to poll the PC gaming public. Just what is out there? What kinds of computers do you folks have? How fast is your connection? How much RAM, baby? The results are a bit surprising if you've heard the lowest common denominator rhetoric of web design courses and instructional manuals. But gaming is an ever-evolving industry, both for producer and player, and those who do not keep up do not, can not, keep playing.

Game Industry Cracks Down on Piracy
Articles Archive | 07/01/00 | GF! Back Catalogue 10/2004 => 1995
Just this week the IDSA (Interactive Digital Software Association, the trade organization for video game makers and the like) announced a lawsuit naming six individuals who have been copying and distributing, for a profit, all kinds of games. What's even more astonishing is that one of these folks is from Idaho, the great home state of GF! We just don't get much publicity for Idaho, and I felt like the connection beckoned me to write this article.
