The Sex in Video Games Conference will be held in San Francisco June 8-9 at the Nob Hill Masonic Center, San Francisco, CA. The conference theme is "Exploring the Business of Digital Erotic Entertainment," which sounds totally not sexy to us. But the conference gains clout thanks to the involvement of Brenda Brathwaite, Game Designer and Founder and Chair of the International Game Developers Association's Sexuality SIG. If you've got a vested (read: business) interest in the future of adult erotic interactive entertainment, then this is the place to go. It should be more scandalous than E3.
game: Armored Core: Formula Front - Extreme Battle

Armored Core is a tricky series: Gamers typically love it or hate it. Stat-hounds and customization freaks really dig the hardcore gearhead approach to battle bots, while the rest of us stick to more action-oriented titles for our big mech enjoyment. Nonetheless, the first Armored Core game is out for the PSP. Armored Core: Formula Front-- Extreme Battle is a fan-targeted title, geared towards current fans of the Armored Core series and fairly inaccessible for newcomers. Matt James has the rundown.

Kodai Djinns are a funky new battle yoyo toy that blends several of the most popular virtual creature fads. The yoyos are computerized and feature a few buttons and a tiny LCD screen. When you open your yoyo, a creature is born, based on the 12 signs of the Chinese Zodiac. Raise your creature by "working out" with the yoyo, and develop its skills and strengths. Eventually you will unlock solitaire minigames as well as the ability to battle other yoyos and connect to PCs for online battle gaming. Learn more right here.

An interesting hybrid of real-time and turn-based strategy play, Cuban Missile Crisis: The Aftermath does its best to set itself apart from the masses of other strategy games. Set in a hypothetical alternate history that posits the Cuban Missile Crisis led to catastrophic nuclear war, the game has a lot going for it: Optional missions, nuclear wastelands, several different campaigns based on different superpowers. There is a lot to like here, but can Cuban Missile Crisis: The Aftermath stand out among the faceless masses of hardcore war games? George has the review.

FROM Software is best known as the makers of the fan-favorite Armored Core series, which makes them immensely qualified to tackle a next-gen heavy robot game. Is Earth destined for overpopulation and possible extinction? Should we pin our hopes for survival in the future on someone with the name "Hack"? Or would we be better off just praying for nuclear armageddon? Space Hack, developed by Rebelmind and published by Meridian 4 is a budget-priced indy game. That makes it automatically a cool thing in the twisted minds of grumpy GF! editors. But is it worth the $20 price of admission? Check in with Sean for his review.

Majesco's Infected has been a highly anticipated PSP title around the GF! offices: It has a great features list that includes zombies (big bonus) and online multiplayer (bigger bonus) that allows you to "infect" other players with your personalized virus if you can beat them online (mindblowingly cool bonus). But features lists can only tell you so much. After a long time anticipating this title, we were excited to get our grubby little zombie-slaying hands on it. Laurie came up with a complete review that let's you know whether Infected is the next big thing or just a biohazard.

Auto Assault is a vehicle-based MMORPG that puts you into a bleak future landscape dominated by greasemonkey aliens with high-powered weapons. Konami has announced that they will begin selling their products directly to customers via their new online storefront, KonamiStyle.com. The online storefront launches with a catalog of 75 Konami titles, including fan-favorite franchises Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Yu-Gi Oh, and Dance Dance Revolution. The move to a direct-sales website will also open up possibilities for Konami to offer customer incentive and reward programs, which Konami hopes will help maintain a community of loyal gamers around the publisher's many games.

One of our resident gaming academics, Laurie Taylor, who is finishing her PhD in English studying games, responds to Rueter's criticisms in the best possible way: refutation and redirection. Laurie points out the wonderfully sensible fact that if people want less violent, better games, then they had better study games in order to find out how to create those new experiences.

id Software is a lumbering juggernaut in the industry, and their new Doom 3 engine is one of the most incredible technologies to hit games. So, of course, we were stoked to get our hands on some Quake IV action, built on the Doom engine. Raven Software handles the development duties this time out, and for fans of high energy running and gunning, Quake IV doesn't get much better than this. Blaine takes it for a spin and delivers the review of the PC version. Can it hold up to the high expectations of the fragging masses? Check here to find out.
game: Painkiller: Hell Wars

Painkiller is headed from the PC to the Xbox next January, and it has survived the transition nearly unscathed. This is good for Xbox owners who have not yet made the jump to the 360, as well as anyone looking for a nice diversion during the Winter doldrums of 2006. Painkiller: Hell Wars puts players into a fast and furious FPS carnage fest, and Tristan has the hands-on experience to compare this to the cult hit released last year for PC.
