Student Declared Witch and Burned for Making In-Game Map of High School.
editorial | 05/02/07 | Aaron Stanton
When a student at Clements High School in Texas made a video game mod based on the layout of his local high school, he probably didn\'t expect the reaction it eventually received. Two months after the map was created, the Virginia Tech shootings happened, and authorities took the students map as a threat. Not only was he removed from the campus grounds and sent to an alternative school, he\'s been bared from participating in graduation. Yet no one seems to believe that he actually represented a threat to the community - in that no one seems convinced he was on the verge of picking up a gun and shooting someone. The only problem is that he did something that - some people, at least - connect to events like Virginia Tech. In other words, it didn\'t matter that he wasn\'t really a witch, merely that he looked enough like one to be punished.

LocoRoco: Super Happy Fun-Time for the PSP
game: LocoRoco
review | 09/27/06 | Shawn Rider
Sony has borrowed another good idea and brings forth a quirky Japanese game that is obviously meant to target the Katamari crowd. Yet, the Katamari crowd is not one to be easily swayed by imitators. So how does Loco Roco fare? Rather well, arigato gozaimus. Funky, lovable graphics, super happy fun-time music, and quirky gameplay that\'s part Super Monkey Ball and part Super Mario Bros. combine to create one of the best games we\'ve ever played, especially on our PSPs.

Redefine the Grind: Sociolotron and the Atypical Gamer (Part Two)
game: Sociolotron
feature | 11/14/05 | Shawn Rider
Last week we published the first part of Shawn\'s in-depth look at the twisted world of Sociolotron. Billed as the ultimate adult MMORPG, Sociolotron features unprecedented levels of player freedom and sexual gameplay. But Shawn found that, much like novels by the Marquis de Sade, the bizarro sex quickly becomes banal and the real meat of the game lies in the ways players build their characters and live out alternative lives within the game. In Part Two of his feature, Shawn talks to senior citizen male prostitutes, lesbian lovers, and a wheelchair-bound mafioso who commands four in-game sex slaves. He also talks to Patrick Lagny, who has created Sociolotron almost single-handedly, about what motivates him to make such a game.

Needless to say, this article features explicit language and frank descriptions of adult and sexual themes. Reader discretion is advised.

Sony\'s Shadow of the Colossus is the latest offering from the team behind cult hit, ICO. Colossus has been making waves among gamers because of its completely unique game design: Basically, the game is comprised of 16 of the most massive boss battles ever. But it\'s also one of the most incredibly beautiful games ever created, and it features an amazing narrative that pushes the boundaries of what we\'ve seen in game stories so far. Any gamer worth her salt MUST play this one.

Ah, Doom 3. Lots of hype, very little duck-tape. Invented by the military and named for its waterproof nature, duck-tape is apparently a technology that has been lost in the future.
