GameTap, the broadband gaming service that allows users to download classic games ranging from recent PC titles to classic NES, Genesis and Dreamcast games, has recently announced two major improvements to the service: First, GameTap TV has finally launched, bringing a wide variety of video programming to the service. Ubicom, who made the Stream Engine chip that is used to shape your broadband traffic in the D-Link DGL4300 Gamer Lounge router, has now released a free utility to check your online playability. The OPScore utility is a quick way to get a more robust fix on your online connection speed than most bandwidth testers, but it still runs in-browser (even if that browser is IE because of the ActiveX requirements, which is whack). The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed a campus-wide Wi-Fi service that can track when and where you connect, recording your location for up to 12 hours. It could be the next best thing in multiplayer game matching (find a PSP or DS user nearby to hook up a game), but with cities like San Fransisco and Philadelphia already looking into municipal broadband projects, this sort of technology also raises some serious ethical questions. And after recent news of World of Warcraft\'s \"Warden\" program spying on your computer we\'re worried about these issues coming directly to videogames. Sony\'s massive blowout with spyware, rootkits, and a public backlash that will no doubt severely wound the company, will also affect in some tangential way (at best) PlayStation 3 development and launch. Aaron takes a look at these issues and probes the changing face of your gaming privacy.

GameTap is Turner Broadcasting\'s newest offering. It is a broadband games-on-demand service that allows unlimited play of hundreds of games for about $15 per month. If you\'re a hardcore retro-gaming junky, there\'s loads to love here: Games are precisely emulated like the original systems, and systems range from Atari 2600 through Commodore 64 to Dreamcast and Sega 32x. Oh, and we hear there\'s some TV-like stuff on it, too.

Heavy.com has expanded its machinima offerings and broken new ground in the IPTV arena with the announcement of the first-ever full season of broadband-distributed programming. The network has announced several new shows, including \"Honey, I Killed the Geezer\" (created using Atari\'s Indigo Prophecy), \"Tourettes Cowboy\" (created using Activision\'s GUN), and \"Dr. Philprah, Colossus Whisperer\" (created using Sony\'s Shadow of the Colossus). There are several more series slated to premiere this month, and each will see multiple episodes released this Fall.

Turner Broadcasting is launching a new broadband entertainment network called GameTap this Fall. GameTap will offer gamers broadband access to a large catalog of PC games, ranging from current hits to classic titles. Today, Turner has announced that its service will be available at a subscription rate of $14.95/month as well as a free two-week trial subscription for anyone interested in the service.

Sony announced several new partnerships and technology deals at E3, making a major play to enter the online gaming market before Microsoft can get its online bits in order. Both companies have professed the importance of online gaming to the success of console systems, and Sony has specifically illuminated desires to create an online distribution network for all kinds of gaming, movies, music, and other broadband entertainment applications.
