The PlayStation 2 launch was legendary for beginning the \"shortages\" craze. After last year\'s Xbox 360 launch, all gamers should now realize that if they want a new console system on launch day, it will be a fight. Nintendo looks to be shipping enough systems to satisfy demand, but this year we\'re concerned again about Sony. With some retailers refusing to take PlayStation 3 preorders, a confusing multi-configuration release offering, and a spotted history of delays and adjustments, PS3 is headed for a rocky launch. We have some details about what to expect on launch day here.

InfinityMods.com claims to have a 360 modchip in hand, and will most likely have it available for purchase within 2 weeks. But what do they really mean by that? Turns out, the statement on their front page is somewhat misleading, since another line, deeper into their website, says, \"Preorders to be accepted within approx 2 weeks.\" So the question isn\'t whether or not there is an Xbox 360 chip, but whether or not you\'d be wise to throw in your money on a preorder for a chip you know nothing about. We take a look at all the information we have (which is admittedly very little) and attempt to make an educated guess about the legitimacy of this claim. Does InfinityMods really have a 360 chip?

The day of November 22nd was quiet compared to the evening of the day before; the Xbox 360 launch was virtually over within hours of 12:01. If you didn\'t have an Xbox 360 by then, chances of getting one had grown slim. Retail outlets that didn\'t take preorders were the kings, the last refuge of gamers that didn\'t buy early or were bumped off the list by supply shortages. We took a moment to drop by a store or two to chat with the faithful during the Xbox 360 launch event.

Tomorrow. If you\'re up on the game industry, you\'ll know what we\'re talking about. Tomorrow. Midnight. The Xbox 360 hits retail outlets. If you don\'t know what that means, then this article isn\'t for you; the chances of you getting a unit on launch day without a preorder are almost non-existent. The chances of getting your order on launch day, even if you did preorder, might be questionable. Regardless, tomorrow morning, meaning 12:01, thousands of lucky gamers are going to be buying their Xbox 360. This article is Part II of our look at what games you\'ll want to pick up at the same time.

Midway has announced that Earth 2160 will come out for PC on November 8. They have also dropped a handful of new screens on us, as well as the info that a preorder package for Earth 2160 will feature a DVD full of goodies: maps and enhancements for 2160, as well as the full version of Earth 2150, the cult-classic predecessor. That is not a bad package for strategy fans, and so far Earth 2160 looks to be one of the more robust RTS titles set to drop this Fall. Check it out.

Gamestop completed its buyout of EB Games this week, making it the single largest game retailer in the country, as reported by Game Daily Biz. The merger creates a company with 4200 retail outlets worldwide, and expected annual revenues of $5 billion. Analysts expect the merger to lead to an increase in the used game market, which has recently been attacked by game publisher organizations as being detrimental to their business. The merger may well mean lower trade-in prices for gamers, too, which might in turn lead to an increase in traffic for online game trading sites as gamers flock to more worthwhile deals. And the news can only be seen as an indication that pre-release reservations and package bundles will enjoy unbridled growth. That could be problematic for gamers expecting to preorder an already very pricey PlayStation 3.

GameStop unveiled it\'s uber-Xbox 360 bundle, the Ultimate, which it offers for $1200. But apparently that just isn\'t enough Xbox 360 for truly hardcore gamers. Enter the Omega Bundle, everything you could possibly buy for your Xbox 360 at a modest *cough* $2000.

As the Xbox 360 launch is really just around the corner, expect loads of little updates and revelations. We reported yesterday about the EB Games Xbox 360 bundles and the OrigenXbox360.com website, and today there are, well, further developments. GameStop has unveiled their lineup of Xbox 360 Bundles, and there are stirrings on OrigenXbox360.com.

EB Games is the first major retailer to post their Xbox 360 preorder page and reveal that they will be selling the console in two bundles (corresponding to the two flavors Microsoft is releasing) which increase the price of each system by $300. This move does not bode well for gamers this holiday season, who are used to being forced into bad bundles in order to purchase scarce new hardware.

As you are by now no doubt aware, the stateside release date for the PlayStation 2 has officially been announced as October 26, 2000 at an unexpectedly low (although I did win a bet on this one against Rick) $299. As you are also by now aware, Sony is not going to ship an unlimited number of these babies. While I can\'t seem to find my notes as to exactly how many units it was, I do recall shifting a bit uncomfortably in my chair and fighting off the urge to run to the nearest phone and preorder. And why? Because every damn PSX owner in the country is going to get one of these things (unless they are completely insane or financially strapped) as soon as they hit the shelves. If you saw any footage of the Japanese release, perhaps it reminded you of a business suit version of the Cabbage Patch riots of ?84\"mobs of drooling fanatics hopped up on barely concealed consumer rage and nearly bursting bladders, refusing to leave their space in line for any but the most dire of emergencies.
