Star Wars fans who
cant wait until Episode III for the plot to move forward are in luck because
theyll have Star Wars: The Clone Wars to satiate some of their hunger. The Clone
Wars take place just after the events of Episode II and place you in the role of one of
three Jedi. As Anakin, Obi-Wan Kenobi, or Mace Windu you will command regiments of the
Clone Army and pilot various vehicles in an effort to preserve the republic. The game
promises to span many planets, and although it will basically be an action oriented
shooter, there will also be some RTS elements incorporated into the game to add depth. The
game that I saw at E3 was a truly impressive sight. As you fly one of the troop transports
over the barren wasteland of Genosis you will be amazed at the level of activity on the
ground. It seems like there are literally hundreds of Clone Troopers and Droids marching
across the landscape, firing back and forth at one another. Your ships lasers rake
the ground and cut through swaths of the advancing enemy; it really feels like being in
the movie. In another section of the game, you get to ride on a speeder bike. An infamous
evil jedi has bombed the Wookie homeworld with poisonous gas. Atop a speeder, you are
trying to outrun the gas, while dodging enemy fire. All this, of course, while youre
flying through the forest, dodging trees in a scene reminiscent of Return of the Jedi.
This was a title that I literally expected to yawn myself through, but once again
LucasArts came up big when I least expected them to and impressed me with their beautiful
graphics and innovative game play.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars also features several multiplayer games, including
Duel, King of the Hill, Conquest, and others. Multiplayer support allows for between two
and four players on GameCube and two-player split-screen mode on PlayStation 2. The
multiplayer games I played allowed gamers to choose from a variety of vehicles showcased
in the movie and go for it in a deathmatch. This allows for some interesting vehicle
match-ups. Clone Wars will be out this fall and could be one of the best Star Wars games
ever. Watch for it.
